Earlier this year, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen announced that the city was looking to modular construction as a means to build low-income, and senior housing. On Thursday, the city took a major step toward making that a reality; the Department of Housing Preservation and Development is set to issue a Request For Proposals (RFP) today that will call for the creation of a fully affordable project in East New York that is built through modular construction.
The Real Deal first reported on this development, which will rise on Eldert Lane, between Pitkin and Glenmore Avenues. The L-shaped lot spans nearly 50,000 square feet, and HPD said it would give preference to developers who showed an interest in building modular homes for low and extremely low income New Yorkers. In addition to the apartments, the site will also have some type of commercial space or a community facility. Prospective developers have until September to apply.
This latest effort is also part of the Mayor’s Affordable Housing 2.0 agenda, to create and preserve 300,000 units of affordable housing by 2026. But the news comes amid a report released by New York University’s Furman Center that details how the city is in the middle of a major affordable housing crisis.
